Thamesbank FC climbed to the top of the London Metropolitan League on Saturday night after substitute Daniel Okafor rose above the Hackney Wanderers defence to head home a 2–1 winner with barely a minute of normal time remaining.
The 3,400 supporters packed into Millwood Road had spent most of the second half bracing for a draw. Wanderers equalised through Ruben Castell on 61 minutes, a swerving strike from 25 yards that left goalkeeper Tomasz Wirek rooted to the spot, and the visitors looked the more composed side until the closing stages.
A change that changed everything
Manager Helen Brightwell sent on Okafor and winger Priya Nandakumar with 18 minutes left, switching to a more direct approach down the right. The reward came when Nandakumar whipped in a free kick that was only half-cleared, and Okafor, unmarked at the back post, did the rest.
“We kept believing. The lads were running on empty, but you could hear the crowd lift them. That header is for them.”Helen Brightwell, Thamesbank FC manager
Thamesbank had taken the lead on 34 minutes through captain Joel Ashworth, who steered in a low cross from Nandakumar after a patient passage of play on the left. The home side dominated possession before the break, but Wanderers grew into the game after half-time and had two decent chances to go ahead before Okafor’s intervention.
Hackney boss Dev Maraj was gracious in defeat but pointed to a missed chance on 77 minutes as the turning point. “We had them on the ropes,” he said. “Football can be cruel.”
